The New York Times has a write up about the “Jersey Devil Hunters” (featured here previously).

It’s a bit of a fluff piece, with the obligatory bigfoot hoax mention and a somewhat patronizing tone, but it does provide a pretty fair look at the group, which seems to be more a social club than a group doing serious research.

Here’s the bit that bothers me:

So far, they have encountered little more than creepy noises, but they adhere to the credo embraced by all seekers of Bigfoot, the Loch Ness monster and Great Caesar’s ghost.

As Ms. Leuter has written: “Until someone proves that there isn’t something out there, I will continue to believe that there is, and I will also continue my efforts to find proof that the Jersey Devil does in fact exist. So there.”

If the Flying Spaghetti Monster (or Bertrand Russell’s teapot) has shown us nothing else, it’s that proving a negative is a) futile and b) completely unscientific.

Bonus – Trailer for “13th Child: Legend of the Jersey Devil”:

This story profiles Jersey boys Jeff Heimbuch and Michael Santo Scardillo, who filmed the horror movie “Leeds Point” for less than $3,000 and no crew. The plot revolves around some brutal murders in southern New Jersey and a reporters’ efforts to solve them (and kill the Jersey Devil).

So yeah… It looks fairly low-budget, but if I’m not mistaken, this guy:

Is Brian Anthony Wilson from The Wire, so you can at least hope Omar shows up and kicks some ass.

Heimbuch and Scardillo are shopping the movie around, and hope to get it in theaters in time for Halloween. Check it out if you get the chance.
